{"id":647,"date":"2014-07-29T17:08:50","date_gmt":"2014-07-29T17:08:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.e-butterfly.org\/contents\/?p=647"},"modified":"2014-08-12T16:43:14","modified_gmt":"2014-08-12T16:43:14","slug":"ebutterfly-of-the-day-arctic-purple-fritillary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.e-butterfly.org\/wordpress\/es\/ebutterfly-of-the-day-arctic-purple-fritillary\/","title":{"rendered":"eButterfly Spotlight \u2013 Arctic (Purple) Fritillary"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>From Gary in Edmonton, Alberta.<\/p>\n<p>Today\u2019s butterfly was a surprise for me in more ways than one.\u00a0\u00a0I ventured\u00a0\u00a0out to the little bog just south of Sherwood Park in hopes of finding\u00a0\u00a0a Giant Sulphur.\u00a0\u00a0No sulphurs, but on the edge of the bog a population of fresh\u00a0<i>Boloria freija<\/i>\u00a0aka Freija fritillarys!\u00a0\u00a0The second surprise was when I got home and took a closer look and found they are in fact not Freija fritillaries, but Purple fritillaries, <i>Boloria chariclea<\/i>. Who knew!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/e4dev.huasambo.com\/contents\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Boloria-chariclea-ventral-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright\" alt=\"Boloria chariclea ventral view\" src=\"http:\/\/e4dev.huasambo.com\/contents\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Boloria-chariclea-ventral-1-300x234.jpg\" width=\"240\" height=\"187\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/e4dev.huasambo.com\/contents\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Boloria-chariclea-1-dorsal.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Boloria chariclea 1 dorsal\" src=\"http:\/\/e4dev.huasambo.com\/contents\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Boloria-chariclea-1-dorsal-300x221.jpg\" width=\"240\" height=\"177\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A number of the\u00a0<i>chariclea<\/i>\u00a0were nectaring at purple Fall asters just outside the bog, along with hordes of European Skippers and oodles of Northern Pearl Crescents. I slogged through the bog\u2026which is boggier than usual this wet summer\u2026in hopes of finding a Giant sulphur but\u00a0\u00a0saw almost nothing therein..except for a another\u00a0<i>chariclea<\/i>. I have slogged this bog on numerous occasions in the past\u2026the footing on the hummocks is always atrocious and today, for the first time, I managed to miss-step and do a 180 into the soggy soggy boggy.\u00a0\u00a0Shocking, and yet refreshing\u2026.<\/p>\n<p>A fine day all around and rewarded once again for going bugging and bogging&#8230;<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><a href=\"http:\/\/e4dev.huasambo.com\/contents\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Boloria-chariclea-ventral-1.jpg\"><br \/>\n<\/a><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From Gary in Edmonton, Alberta.
